GEOFFREY BAWA’S EARLIER OFFICE & RESIDENCE – 1960 – 1998 | Ar. Geoffrey Bawa
The residence is a collage of indoor and outdoor living rooms hybridizing courtyard house and tower house typologies. The complicated sequence of spaces retains traces of its original configuration as a private row of four compact bungalows. Bawa used his own home as a canvas for architectural experimentation, testing formal or spatial techniques in the ever-evolving composition of the residence before he articulated them in projects for other clients.
GANGARAMIYA TEMPLE – 1800 A.D – The temple’s architecture demonstrates an eclectic mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese architecture originally a small hermitage on a piece of marshy land.
SEEMA MALAKA – 1976 – 1978 | Ar. Geoffrey Bawa – The seema Malaka is the only modern Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka to be built on a non-traditional design. It floats on Colombo’s Beira Lake and is used as an inauguration hall for the monks of Gangaramia temple. The temple consists of a central plinth connected to the lakeside by a causeway and to two lesser plinths by and is situated not far from the placid waters of Beira Lake on a plot of land that was short bridges. While the design is quite revolutionary it recognizes a number of precedents and reveals the depth of Bawa’s interest in classical Sinhalese architecture.

HERITANCE KANDALAMA HOTEL – 1991 | Ar. Geoffrey Bawa Heritance Kandalama is an architectural masterpiece by Geoffrey Bawa, built overlooking the eighth wonder of the world – the rock fortress of Sigiriya. The hotel situated at the heart of the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka, close to five UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Heritance Kandalama is shaped like the outspread wings of a bird, following the line of the cliff from which it seems to emerge. The hotel is a staggering 1km from end to end, and rises up seven floors, yet appears to be a perfectly natural extension of the mountainside. The flat roof and timber pillars support a screen of vegetation that attracts local wildlife. The abundance of real-life animals around the hotel is complemented by wonderful large-scale sculptures within it. A metal owl is suspended outside the main restaurant; wooden elephants inhabit the lounge; a stone cobra uncoils along the terrace overlooking the infinity pool.
